Language Acquisition

The Drake University Language Acquisition Program (DULAP)offers a unique approach to language learning.

Focusing on the development of functional communicative competency, students learn to use the language they are studying. In order to foster a communicative classroom environment in which all students are active participants, course sections are limited to a maximum of 4 students. A native speaker, who functions as a model and resource person, facilitates class sessions. Students also work with their Language Coordinator, a professional linguist who mentors their progress. The use of technology is integrated throughout the program. Additional structure and guidance are provided in the Language Learning Strategies courses, which equip students with the necessary skills and resources to be more effective language learners.

Nine languages are offered: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Hindi, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.
