Drake University National Alumni Scholarship
The deadline for applying for the 2008 National Alumni Scholarship program has past. Please return to this page in summer 2008 for information about the 2009 program.
The Drake University National Alumni Association awards prestigious scholarships each year to outstanding first year students entering directly from high school. Applicants for the National Alumni Scholarship need not be related to Drake alumni.
The scholarships awarded through this National Alumni Scholarship Program include:
- Six National Alumni Scholarships, which cover the costs of tuition, fees, board and double occupancy in a Drake residence hall.
- Ten George A. Carpenter Scholarships, which cover full tuition.
Of these 16 Alumni and Carpenter awards, one has a special designation for a student from a high school in Polk County, Iowa. Alumni and Carpenter Scholarships supersede all other Drake merit awards.
- Trustee Scholarships of $1,000 are awarded to all eligible students who complete the National Alumni Scholarship application process and participate in a Scholarship Day.
All scholarships are renewable for three years if the recipient in enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits each term and maintains the required minimum cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale: Alumni and Carpenter Scholarships 3.25; Trustee Scholarships 2.0. Additionally, Alumni Scholars must live in approved Drake University housing to renew the room and board portion of their full scholarship award.
The Criteria
National Alumni Scholars are selected by Drake's National Alumni Scholarship Committee on the basis of high scholastic achievement, extracurricular and community activities, leadership, communication skills, and potential for contributing to the academic and extracurricular life of Drake University. Whether an applicant is related to a Drake alumna/alumnus has no bearing on selection.

National Alumni Scholarship applicants must ensure that all admission materials and National Alumni Scholarship application materials are postmarked by December 7, 2007. There will be no exceptions. It is recommended that students provide their school personnel ample time to fulfill the request to mail transcripts to Drake and that students review their transcripts for accuracy. It is also recommended that candidates make a copy of their scholarship materials before mailing and obtain a certificate of mailing from a postal clerk to verify postmark date.

- Application for admission
- Official school transcript (and officially certified external examination results for international students)
- Official ACT or SAT test results (may be submitted on official school transcript)
- $25 application fee (waived for online applicants)

Required Scholarship Days: February 9, or February 23, 2008
Drake National Alumni Scholarship applicants must participate in one of the scholarship days from 8 a.m. through mid-afternoon CST on Saturday, February 9 or Saturday, February 23, 2008. The scholarship day competition is required for further consideration for the Alumni, Carpenter and Trustee Scholarships. Provisions to participate in one of the scholarship days via fax, e-mail and telephone will be made for applicants outside the continental United States. During their assigned scholarship day, applicants will have an individual interview with members of the selection committee, write a timed essay, and participate in additional activities. The National Alumni Scholarship day offers exciting opportunities to learn more about Drake University and experience its many advantages.
Indicate your scholarship day preference on the application. A scholarship day will be assigned to applicants based on the receipt date of completed application materials and program capacity. A student may request to change an assigned scholarship day prior to January 11, 2008; however, program limitations may not allow for the request to be granted. Confirmation information will be sent to all qualified applicants the week of January 14, 2008. In the event of any unforeseen conflicts due to weather, illness or family emergency, contact 515-271-3181 by 4 p.m. CST the Friday prior to your assigned scholarship day or 515-271-4139 on the morning of the Scholarship Day to discuss any possible alternatives.
