Safety and Health
Campus Security
You're at Drake University to pursue your educational, professional and personal goals. That's why Drake's top priorities include providing a safe environment in which you can study, work, and play. That's the full-time focus of the friendly men and women in uniform you see on foot, on bicycles, and in cars around campus - the Drake Campus Security staff.
Drake Campus Security is one of the largest private campus security forces in the state of Iowa, consisting of 20 full-time officers who patrol the campus on foot and in cars around the clock. A computerized communications/dispatch post is staffed 24 hours a day. Although unarmed, the officers receive training by state-certified law enforcement instructors and are supplemented when necessary by off-duty Des Moines police officers. Security officers work closely with the Des Moines Police Department in making arrests and investigating crimes.
Drake also offers you these advantages for your safety:
- 46 security phones with direct lines to the Campus Security office are located inside buildings and in heavily used outside locations across campus. You are connected immediately to Campus Security when you pick up the receiver.
- Front desk receptionists are on duty in every Drake residence hall 24 hours a day. All hall doors are locked at night, and the main doors are locked at 11 p.m. Every person wanting to enter any residence hall after 11 p.m. must present identification.
- Drake Direct, a free taxi cab service for Drake students in the evenings. Students call for a taxi when the need arises and the company has a dedicated taxi reserved for Drake students. The service is available seven days a week from 7:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
The campus security statistics report is available online. The U.S. Department of Education has a Web site that allows you to search security statistics for over 6,000 colleges & universities in the United States.
